Victoria, KS

Named after Queen Victoria, the city was founded in 1873 by George Grant who envisioned a town that would adopt British methods of agriculture and stock imported cattle. Today it is a thriving city with a small but ethnically diverse population of about 1,300.

The city’s warm and welcoming residents will make you feel right at home as soon as you arrive. You can look forward to a dizzying array of school events, sports activities, and other gatherings. The city also has a growing list of clubs and organizations that you can join.

Victoria is located in the eastern portion of Ellis County, south of Interstate 70. It’s just minutes away from the neighboring city of Hays and Fort Hays State University. The landscape is mostly flat until you reach the Smoky Hill River valley to the south.

Choose from a lovely collection of homes upon arrival, and take in the gorgeous scenery as you explore the city.

Those who live here have access to the following attractions:

  • The Basilica of St. Fidelis
Also known as the Cathedral of the Plains, this architectural feat is among “The Eight Wonders of Kansas” and is listed on the National Register of Historic Place. Its construction was completed in 1911.

The Romanesque-style church serves an active congregation and receives over 16,000 tourists each year. Its spires can be seen for many miles from I-70.

  • St. Fidelis Cemetery
The cemetery is known for its exquisite markers, particularly the unique Volga crosses made of iron. These markers echo the rich heritage of the early German-speaking settlers who hail from the areas surrounding the Volga River in south Russia.
  • The Holy Cross Cemetery
Located in Pfeifer, just 11 miles south of Victoria, it is also home to an astonishing collection of Volga crosses.
  • Library Grill & Bar
